What to Expect at Your Pet’s Eye Exam

At the Veterinary Eye Center, we’re committed to providing your pet with the highest level of ophthalmic care in a calm, supportive environment. Whether your visit is for a new concern or a follow-up, our goal is to make the experience as smooth and stress-free as possible for both you and your pet.

When You Arrive

When you check in, our client care team will review your pet’s medical history and the reason for your visit. We recommend arriving a few minutes early to give your pet time to adjust to the new environment.

During the Exam

Your pet will be examined by one of our board-certified veterinary ophthalmologists. A comprehensive eye exam includes several specialized tests to assess your pet’s eye health and visual function. These may include:

  • Tear Production Test (Schirmer Tear Test): This test uses a small, sterile strip of paper placed gently inside the lower eyelid to measure tear production over one minute. It helps diagnose dry eye (keratoconjunctivitis sicca) by evaluating whether your pet is producing a normal amount of tears.
  • Intraocular Pressure Check (Tonometry): To check the pressure inside the eye, we use a handheld device called a tonometer. This quick, gentle test is essential for diagnosing conditions like glaucoma or uveitis.
  • Slit Lamp Biomicroscopy: A high-intensity light and microscope are used to examine the front structures of the eye in detail, including the eyelids, cornea, iris, and lens.
After the Exam

Once the exam is complete, your ophthalmologist will discuss their findings with you, explain any diagnoses, and outline a personalized treatment plan. This may include:

  • Prescription eye drops or medications
  • Monitoring or follow-up care
  • Minor procedures or surgical options if needed

We’ll also send a full summary of the visit to your primary care veterinarian so everyone is aligned on your pet’s care.
